042811: CONVERSE x MACKINTOSH JP JOHNNY OX RELEASE – THIS SATURDAY (4/30)
|x| What’s good, fam! Did summer start early this year or are we just extra blessed being out here on an island, in the middle of the pacific ocean, with tropical breezes? OK, so it’s just us, then? I keed. I keed. But all in all, there is so much good news: NFL season is back on track (kinda sorta), D.Rose x Mamba in the Finals?? maybe??, and best news of all is that I’m headed to Guam today to DJ the grand opening of the Stussy Guam flagship store, located in the same retail arm where KICKS/HI GUAM is. (This newsletter was my last order of business before I hopped on ze plane!) So all my Guam familia, come through the Stussy Guam shop at 900P THIS SATURDAY (4/30). I’ll be providing the music backdrop. There will be live painting by local artists, giveaways, and just all around good times to be had by all. HAFA ADAI ALL DAY!
CONVERSE FIRST STRING x MACKINTOSH: JACK PURCELL “JOHNNY” – SATURDAY (4/30) RELEASE:

Via Converse First String: “A little over 75 years ago, Converse birthed the Jack Purcell shoe. Originally designed for badminton, the shoes quickly became country club classics and in the 1950s when young, rebellious icons of film stepped out in them, the shoes were assured their lasting place in American style. Mackintosh arrived on the scene more than 150 years ago with a utilitarian mission to provide warm and dry rainwear for the citizens of rainy Great Britain. With a history of wearers ranging from British police forces to Duke’s of York, the classic rainwear has cemented a high-function, high-fashion legacy worldwide. Recasting the iconic Jack Purcell shoe using signature Mackintosh waterproof, rubberized cotton. The three versions of the Jack Purcell Johnny shoe, each with classic Jack detailing with white rubber soles and a signature navy toe-smile. The shoes include a version in: 1) navy blue with a lime interior, 2) putty with a chocolate interior, and 3) dark olive with a deep plum interior. Clean, monochromatic laces match the shoes’ upper but each also comes with a spare lace in the contrast color.”
If you think these look dope in the photos, trust me, they look even better in person. The original Mackintosh cotton upper has a rich, strong texture. The mix of colorways might sound odd at first, but they all work, and work really well, at that. For those of you who understand how big of a deal this is for Mackintosh to work with Converse on this project, this is your opportunity to get your hands on a legit Mackintosh piece without having to shell out a stack or two for one of their jackets or trenchcoats. This is heritage menswear with a contemporary twist at its finest.
You can get your pair(s) this Saturday (4/30) at KICKS/HI. We are one of two exclusive retailers for First String Converse product on the island. First come, first served. Limited to stock on hand. No holds or discounts on release product.
Phone orders accepted on remaining pairs beginning Monday (5/1) at 1100A (Hawaii time): 808.941.9191.
STUSSY x DICKIES:

Stussy continues to redefine the lifestyle market for dudes year in and year out. They have always balanced their history as one of the building blocks of the streetwear game with always being one of the leaders of it, as well, which is an extremely hard task to do – let alone do it well. For this mini-collection, Stussy has teamed up with workwear powerhouse: Dickies, to produce reinterpreted workwear pieces – for example: the chambray workshirt picuted here. Roll up ‘yer sleeves, and get widdit!

TIMBERLAND ABINGTON – LIGHTWEIGHT BOOT:

Timberland Abington is a shop favorite, and this lightweight boot is an instant classic. The upper consists of a waxed/coated canvas. Pretty much everything about this shoe is super on point. I personally like that there are 5 eyelets, instead of 3 or 4, because it gives the shoe more body. The triple black colorway needs to be seen in person. It is probably one of the nicest all black shoe executions you will see this year.
Phone orders accepted: 808.941.9191.
TIMBERLAND ABINGTON – 3 EYE BOAT SHOE:

Timberland Abington isn’t going to just make a canvas upper boat shoe and call it a day. No siree. Timberland Abington is going to man up and mix a suede and rugged canvas upper, slap it on top of a super comfortable Vibram outsole whilst you’re holding your girlfriend’s knock off LV purse outside of Forever 21 and she’s shopping with your credit card, sucka.

NIKE BASKETBALL – KOBE VI “PURPLE GRADIENT”:

If I’m not mistaken, Mamba was wearing these Purple Gradient VI’s in the playoff game where we twisted his ankle. This purple to black gradient upper is SUPER FRESH! I am all about these VI’s. I’m a huge proponent of the Kobe V, and haven’t picked up any of the VI’s until the “Duke” colorway. I missed out on those red to black gradient ones and especially the “Chaos” ones, but I’m making sure to get my hands on this gradient jumpoff. Have you ever thought that these are going to be sought after retros in like 8-10 years from now? The growth of Kobe’s shoes stylistically and technologically have been similar to Jordans. Not specifically similar, but in the sense that there is an equal balance of on and off the court appeal in the shoes.

NIKE RUNNING – ZOOM STRUCTURE +14:

We have steady noticed a sharp increase in interest of running silhouettes. The Free and Lunar outsoles have breathed new life into the running category at the big swoosh. It feels like back in the day when you first recognized an Air Trainer 1 as a technical cross-training shoe, but also as something you could rock to the club. Its a feeling of familiarity in that these are running styles (Lunar Eclipse, Free, this Zoom Structure +14, etc.) but that there is the added technology and styling that pole vaults these silhouettes into the future. For example: this Zoom Structure +14 has been rated as a really great running shoe, but I could also see you wearing it to the mall with some khaki shorts & a crisp white tee – not a problem. Tie them up till the eyelets are almost touching each other is telling people you’re going for marathon status. A slick, looser lace job says you’re coolin’ coolin’ *swizz beatz voice*.
