The timing for our opening up our account with Pendleton and the arrival of this Pendleton x Shwood "Canby" sunglasses is perfect. Pendleton absolutely bodied this collab with their signature patterned, wool fabric bag, and the amazing laser etched pattern arms. I already bought our KICKS/HI x Shwood "Canby". Am I really going to break for these shades too?? (BTW the answer is: DUH! There is no other acceptable answer.) I don’t know much more that I can say about Eric Haze than what has already been written in praise over the years. The man is a living modern design legend. Fact. All black, err’thang. This triple black colorway option gives the new bron bron shoe a totally different look/feel. As much of a total departure this is from the Lebron 8 & Lebron 8 V2, I am feeling this silhouette for some reason. Its “cool” for lack of a better word, and hopefully that description didn’t just make the entire shoe “uncool” for everyone. Oh man, I am totally just eating my words right now and it doesn’t taste too good…someone pass the pepper, puh-lease…
Speaking of how different the triple black Lebron 9 is vs other colorways…feast. your. eyes. I’ve seen people rocking these on/off the court and I am not mad at this colorway at all either, though. If you do wear a bugged out colorway on the court, you really need to have: a super “wet” jump shot, a wicked driving game, or just be super terrible so people can attribute it to you either meeting expectations of the shoe or overcompensating for lack of talent…feel me? Stop me if you’ve heard this before: NBA = No Basketball Anymore…If you’re real quiet, that was Rik Smits shedding a single tear. I mean, come on, guys! You guys are arguing over like a tenth of a percentage point. The real shame here is that NBA players are notoriously very Antoine Walker with their money. You would think its mo money, no problems. Not the case. Anyway, I think people just want to watch some basketball already. Thank the heavens for NCAA hoops or I would be going looney! BTW the University of Hawaii team looks formidable this year… NIKE SB – DUNK HI PREMIUM “TAUN TAUN” QUICKSTRIKE / SATURDAY (11/19) RELEASE:
Empire Strikes Back. Luke is caught out in a snow storm. Han Solo finds the bol and to save his buddy’s life, he cuts open Luke’s Taun Taun and shoves his body into its guts to keep his body warm overnight. True Bear Grylls type levels before Bear Grylls was even Cub Grylls, feel me? But yeah, that scene is where the Nike SB design team drew their inspiration for this Dunk Hi Premium Quickstrike. The tonal grey, long hair suede and wool upper references the color of the Taun Taun’s fur, and the Nike check colorway is the color of the Taun Taun’s tusks. Without the story, its a good looking shoe so the win is still intact here. This shoe is a Quickstrike; therefore, we are talking limited pairs available and not every shop will be receiving this shoe. NIKE SB NOVEMBER ’11 – DUNK HI:

I’ve been on a steady diet of recent rap releases: A$AP rocky “LiveLoveA$AP”, drake “take care” (the leak, but I’m hood like that. Furthermore, why isn’t arguably the club song/beat of the year, “The Motto”, on that piece? T-Minus needs an award for that beat, and the remix with Tyga…man, dude almost steals that entire song, though. Ignant rap rules everything around me… *err’thang.), nacho picasso “for the glory”, sir michael rocks “premier politics”…ok, I need to snap out of that because I could see this turning into a less cerebral Pitchfork, and I know you just came here for the pictures…all crew HOLD TIGHT! NIKE QUICKSTRIKE – “WHEAT/HAYSTACK” PACK – AM90 VT PREMIUM, DUNK HIGH VT PREMIUM, AF1 HIGH VT PREMIUM / SATURDAY (11/12) RELEASE:
Proper protocol is usually: build & destroy, but I’m going to take creative license here and: whittle away & praise. First, Nike has this annoying habit of taking a particular technology or style element and then running it rampant across categories and silhouettes until customers are overwhelmed and over it within a short period of time. Its too much, too fast. Nobody needed 45 colorways of the Kobe VI AND have it available for Nike ID. In this case, vac tech is that style element which is teetering on the edge of becoming a “meh” application. ALL THAT SAID, THIS “WHEAT/HAYSTACK” QUICKSTRIKE PACK IS AMAZING! I mean, take the ultra-classic, never-will-be-tarnished wheat colorway and put it on arguably three of the most iconic Nike silhouettes: AM90, AF1 High (SHEED!) & Dunk High, but then comes that infomercial clincher: “but that’s not all folks!” Because they didn’t just wheat/haystack colorway these premium styles…they VAC TECHED them! (cue: “oooh”s and “aaaah”s) The round hiking laces, which I particularly am a SUCKER for, are just the icing on the proverbial cake. For all intents and purposes, this pack is up for quickstrike of the year, in my worthless opinion. Every one of these shoes is like Timbs for dudes that always wanted Timbs but never look proper in Timbs because let’s face it, 6″ wheat Timbs are not for every man. This is beside the fact that you need to get down to the shop on Saturday and get one/all. I already have been losing sleep because I know for sure that I’m getting the Dunk High, but am torn between the AM90 or AF1 High… Decisions… Decisions… VANS VAULT – FALL 2011:
I like the design of the 106 Moc a lot. You know that with Vault product, you are getting top notch, premium materials in the mix. Vans Vault is like when you can go into the RRL section/store and shop with the big boys. The quality and attention to details/styling is always so on point, and many times pre-trending. I always study every Vault silhouette we get in to see their approach to the design. Always learning.
This Vault Chukka Bardenas LX is AMAZING! I feel like it could be a Hermes levels type shoe. Premium leather upper with no lining. Raw leather laces. Square punched lace holes with no eyelets. It is all playing out like a beautiful dream, but its real life and I’m sitting with this shoe right in front of my laptop as I type this. Glorious.
I miss the Mountain Edition. That said, hello Vault Buffalo Boot LX! Perforated suede and Knoll Textile upper in grey is already an instant win. The black, round hiking laces are a great contrast. The stamped logo on the ankle upper is dope. Looks great with shorts, denim or chinos. Can’t say much more than that, can I? Welcome to the world of Pendleton! We have been trying to lock down this account for such a long time! Perseverance has finally paid off, and we can proudly say that we are an official Pendleton retailer! Hooray! Their product line is vast: clothing, blankets, housewares, bicycles…you name it! Their lineage is as an American heritage brand has been around since 1909. You definitely know a Pendleton shirt, blanket when you see it. Right off the bat. Its that iconic. The use of their woven patterns have been utilized and collaborated with by the likes of: Opening Ceremony, Vans, Converse, Nike, etc. Its as timeless as timeless gets.
Pendleton large towels. These bad boys are like 40″ x 70″. Super high quality, jacquard weave. The edges are all capped to keep from unraveling. The colors are extremely vibrant. Not only are they perfect for using as they are intended to: as a towel to dry off after a shower or the beach, but because of its size, you can also use it to drape your couch or the foot of your bed. There are such things as throw blankets for that as well, but who’s counting? And for the record, I’ve been rocking ‘lo or Vivienne Westwood towels as a bed garnish for years. I’m on one. Its been great to watch Hall of Fame grow as a brand. Its really coming into its own, and I’m really glad its seen its way with us the entire time. The first black leather colorway is a certified banger, but this right here…THIS RIGHT HERE!! Deep maroon Horween leather upper?! This shoe is so proper that it would get to sit at the head of the table at any Presidential dinner. You already know the story behind the premium Horween leather from the first time ’round so I’ll skip all of that, but just know that the first colorway sold out in less than 3 days, and there are more people that are hyped on this release than the first one… HUF x JANSPORT BACKPACK / SATURDAY (11/5) RELEASE:
Our buddies over at HUF teamed up with Jansport to produce a new collab backpack. It has everything you can think of, outside of tying your shoelaces for you and telling you that you have a piece of pepper between your teeth. Designed to be worn often and everywhere with Jansport’s rugged construction and HUF’s stylistic direction; this one will be a good purchase if you were in the market for a backpack to travel with or for every day use.

That deconstructed look that John Varvatos has mastered for his Converse collection is so good. I love all the overpainting, raw leather laces, tarnished stud embellishments, etc. He definitely has branded that look to a tee. This JV Star Player is another good example of this. Nike Lunarglide 3. The designer(s) of this colorway DEFINITELY went to an aquarium or bird sanctuary right before they sat down to draw this one up.
Air Max Lunar marries Air and Lunar technology in this shoe that looks like a throwback to like ’98 ACG times. Nike knows how to catch my attention every time they throw those dope hiking, round laces on sneakers, man. I’m saying…. NIKE BASKETBALL – NOVEMBER ’11 ARRIVALS:
Best Kobe VI colorway other than that Italian camo jumpoff. I’m dumb into this one, and I don’t like the VI as much as I did the V’s. What does it matter anyway, Kobe is going to end up playing for a team in the Ukraine this year…it is going to be interesting to see how all these companies that have players’ names behind shoes are going to market the shoes if this season is a wash, which it is teetering on the edge of actually happening. Sad state. Very nice colorway as consolation.

I wear those charcoal 8′s like there’s no tomorrow, but that might change with the launch of the drastically different Lebron9. Whilst the difference between the Kobe V and VI is super minimal, the difference between the Lebron 8 and 9 is like night and day (again). The design team behind the Lebron line has definitely kept the silhouettes evolving to suit both Lebron’s game and the demands of the other 99% of players who might purchase his shoe that aren’t as gifted as Bron Bron. CONVERSE FIRST STRING – STRAIGHT SHOOTER HIGH / SATURDAY (10/29) RELEASE:
The Straight Shooter continues to be a breakout hit silhouette this year. Its pretty easy to throw a wild colorways with bells and whistles on a retro sneaker and call it a day, but to create a simplified, silhouette that infuses technology (sewn in Lunarlon insole) is much harder to pull off. That is why there is only one Hermes and lots of Forever 21 type shops. Here, the Striaght Shooter gets the hi-top treatment, and it is a winner. I absolutely dig the toe cap that ventures off around the side of the shoe, and that triangular section midway up the eyelets is a good visual break in the upper. Super clean execution, and it looks OUTSTANDING with shorts or a nice slimfit chino. CONVERSE by JOHN VARVATOS – CHUCK TAYLOR PREMIUM HI:
This silver over-painted Chuck Taylor Hi by John Varvatos would strike fear in the heart of any vampire, but hopefully you just haven’t visited the dentist in like 14 years and those are just teeth that need a little bit of work so that you can actually like these shoes a lot. What Play Cloths does really well overall is running graphic elements/stories back through different pieces in their line every season. Sometimes a tee graphic will also be available on a snapback cap, and then a part of that graphic is referenced as an embroidery on a longsleeve button-up or a varsity jacket. I like when I see continuity like that because it shows cohesiveness as a brand. Like its not just a bunch of designs just thrown together. Play Cloths has been one of the most popular lines we have stocked over the past couple years. Good stuff as always. It has been a humbling, organic journey that was been laced with as many pitfalls as there has been success, but therein lies the beauty of a strong business with ties embedded within and drawing energy from the community and people it services. We have always strove to put on for Hawaii and the shop with as much forward thinking and design as it is drawn from the rich traditions and cultures that are bountiful here. This limited edition Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Hi is a milestone in our 10 year anniversary. A shop mascot of sorts, and recurring motif since we first opened for business September 12, 2001, has been the tiger shark, which is native to the island waters. With this shoe being our third collaboration with Converse, we wanted to step outside of a material play and run with a pattern, which we chose a tiger camouflage to do so. The tiger camo is a subtle reference to our tiger shark mascot. The camo pattern is technologically advanced in that it is pin-point laser-printed on the material used for the upper. The orange outsole is an ode to our signature shop color: orange. The video for the release not only celebrates the launch of the shoe, but it also embraces the friends, family, and Hawaii living that has got us this far – with 10 upon 10 upon 10 more years of continued growth and success shining brightly in our future.
